Tally is excellent accounting software for your auditor. A shop counter needs something else: fast barcode billing, stock by item, offers and WhatsApp bills. Most shops do best with a billing app at the counter that sends its vouchers to Tally for the CA.
Two different jobs
| Job | Tally | Billing / POS app |
|---|---|---|
| Books, ledgers, audit | Excellent | Basic to good |
| Barcode billing at the counter | Slow | Built for it |
| Thermal receipts, Tamil names | Limited | Yes |
| Offers, combos, loyalty | No | Yes |
| Stock alerts, expiry, sizes | Limited | Yes |
| WhatsApp bills and reminders | No | Yes |
Signs you have outgrown Tally at the counter
- Customers wait while the cashier types item names.
- You keep stock in a separate notebook or Excel.
- Your CA spends days fixing sales entries every month.
- You cannot see today’s profit until the month closes.
Use both: billing at the counter, Tally for the CA
You do not have to choose. Bill at the counter in a POS app and send the sales and purchase vouchers to Tally at the end of the day or month. Your accountant keeps working in Tally as before.
How Billman connects to Tally
The Tally Bridge add-on in Billman sends your vouchers to Tally — either as a Tally XML file or straight to a running Tally on your network — with a sync log so nothing is sent twice. Moving the other way, it can import your masters (parties, products, units) and past sales and purchase vouchers from Tally.
Moving from Tally? Import the masters first, then only the open bills — not years of history.
FAQ
Can I bill in Tally at a shop counter?
You can, but it is slow for barcode billing and has no thermal receipt, offers or stock alerts built for retail.
Will my CA still get data in Tally?
Yes. Billman’s Tally Bridge sends vouchers as Tally XML or straight to a running Tally.
Can I bring my Tally parties and products into Billman?
Yes — the Tally Bridge imports masters, and parties also import from a Tally ledger export.
