A shorter or longer number, such as your item code 1001, has no EAN form. Make it a Code 128 barcode.
How to use this barcode generator
- Choose EAN for a product number, or Code 128 for any other number or code.
- For EAN, type 12 digits (EAN-13) or 7 digits (EAN-8) and the check digit is added, or type all 13 or 8 to check them. For any other length, tap “Make it a Code 128 barcode”.
- Choose whether to print the number under the bars.
- Download the barcode as PNG (for Word, Excel or printing) or SVG (stays sharp at any size).
Do I need GS1 registration?
For barcodes used only in your own shop — your item codes, loose items, shelf labels — you can make your own. To sell your products through other shops, supermarkets or online marketplaces, they usually ask for official EAN numbers registered with GS1 India.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% size. Shrinking a barcode too much makes it hard to scan.
- Black bars on a white background scan best. Avoid coloured or shiny labels.
- Leave clear space on both sides of the bars.
- Test-scan one label before printing a full sheet.

What is the check digit in an EAN-13 barcode?
The last of the 13 digits. It is worked out from the first 12, so a scanner can catch a misread. Type 12 digits here and the check digit is added for you.
Can I make my own barcodes for my shop?
Yes, for items used only in your shop, such as your own item codes or loose items. To sell your products through other shops or marketplaces, get official EAN numbers from GS1 India.
Which barcode should I use for my own item codes?
Code 128. It holds a number of any length as well as letters, so codes like 1001 or SKU-RICE-25KG work, and almost every scanner reads it.
Can I make a barcode for a number shorter than 12 digits?
Yes. A 7-digit number becomes an EAN-8 barcode. Any other length, such as 1001 or 98765, can’t be an EAN, so make it a Code 128 barcode, which takes a number of any length.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
PNG works everywhere, including Word and Excel. SVG stays sharp at any size, so it is better for label software and large prints.
